Despite Toronto's turn-of-the-century industrial core being home to a number of century-old four and five storey warehouses  - which were all but abandoned until they were rezoned 'live/work' in the 90s - very few of them became residential lofts for two reasons. The first reason was that the demand for loft living was in its infancy when the City embarked on revitalizing either side of the central business district - making it risky for developers to take the leap of faith. After all, were the buying public truly ready to live in marginalized 'industrial' areas with limited amenities and a lot of grit? The answer was a trepidatious "Yes".

The second reason was that, just as development teams were gaining the confidence to embrace the live/work loft market, the economy began rebounding with the Information and Technology boom of the mid to late 90s. As creative companies began seeking commercial offices that were hip and loft like, commercial developers snapped up the old warehouses to serve start ups willing to pony up the high rents. With the costs to convert to old warehouses into commercial spaces less expensive - because the buildings didn't need to meet our more stringent residential building code for higher sound attenuation systems - along with the high construction costs to reconfigure a dilapidated vintage building into have multiple units with washrooms and kitchens - the residential conversion market was effectively shut out. Our own Steven Fudge experienced this time of transition first hand, as he launched his Innovative Space career during this era, and spearheaded a dozen of these conversions - including The Button Factory, The Movie House, and The Monarch Building, to name a few.

One of the King West neighbourhood's well-regarded loft conversions is 'The Massey Harris Lofts' at 915 King Street West. Originally built in 1899 as the Massey Harris Farm Equipment head office, the building was converted in 2003 to create 46 unique loft units. This historical loft building, restored by Canderel Stoneridge, features 100+ year old original brick walls and wood post & beams. First floor units are partially below grade, and the penthouse units comprise an addition on the original structure, so if you're really seeking a light-filled original brick and beam space, it's the centre floors of this loft condo which you've got to set your sights on. This is a building where every single Massey Harris loft is unique - which is why it's no wonder the units so rarely come available!

For those who celebrate a walking life, Massey Lofts is just steps to King West's stellar restaurant and nightlife scene, and a hop, skip and a jump to the Thompson Hotel's always-open Thompson Diner! Neighbourhood amenities include an abundance of home furnishing shops, art galleries and clothing retailers to please and entertain. Don't miss the stellar offerings like Edulis for unique ‘wild and foraged’ fare, Sushi930 when you’re craving California rolls, Broncos for pitchers and sliders, and Delysees Authentic Bakery to satisfy your sweet tooth! And, of course, Pizza Libretto maintains a stellar reputation as one of the area's most well-loved eateries! This loft is steps to the famous West Queen West 'hood, now the epicentre of creativity, collaboration and community. The many galleries are mixed in with unique boutiques, purveying decor, modern and antique furniture, vintage clothing, textiles, gifts, and food, each with character worthy of their creative surroundings.

If you enjoy quiet days outdoors, love open air exercise, or simply occasionally need to escape the 'bright lights, big city' vibe to kick back amongst green things, lush and sprawling Trinity-Bellwoods park is just a couple blocks north, with its community centre pool and home of the annual Queen West Art Crawl. Alternatively, take a stroll toward the water where the expansive recreational and cultural activities of Harbourfront always hold adventure. Don't feel like walking? With the King streetcar line at your front door, it's just a quick ride to the Financial District, the Entertainment District, and St. Lawrence Market. Plus it's mere moments to the Gardiner Expressway, which provides speedy access to the airport or to cottage country. This is truly living in the centre of it all!

We love Loft 405. Located on the fourth floor with a west exposure overlooking a park, this 917 square foot (according to MPAC) sun-drenched space features exposed brick walls, wood beams and 11'9" ceilings. From the front foyer, a separate den with sliding doors and shelving is a great home office or guest space. The hall flows into an open plan entertainment space with a galley kitchen fitted with stainless steel appliances, stone counters and floating shelves. A well-proportioned dining area combines with an expansive sitting area with a flat screen television, where a second set of sliding doors reveals the master bedroom with a walk-in closet and stacking laundry. A recently-renovated luxe washroom is a sunken spa retreat, with an oversized shower and soaking tub; it's truly a unique and indulgent space, with its quality appointments and barrel-vaulted ceiling.

This loft is special, especially featuring four banks of over-sized windows that fill the space with natural light! Offered for $3450 monthly + hydro and ready for occupancy on April 15th, this loft is available for a minimum one year lease. Underground parking located in the building across the street may be available for an additional monthly amount - ask us for details! Whether for work or play, day or night, all the best of Downtown Toronto and urban living is at your finger tips when you live at Massey Lofts.
