Wish you were here!
Sitting on the open air front patio of Wish Cafe & Bar - pairing a glass of wine with evening people watching - feels beachy and a little bit Hollywood. The atmosphere is an endearing combination of being 'in the centre of it all', and lounging on a friend's porch. With the shops of Yonge Street to the west and Yorkville and the bright lights of Bloor to the north - including all the foot traffic that such coveted location implies - Wish is a bit of a hot spot! But the pleasant staff and epic comfort food makes it all feel pleasantly familial at the same time.
The popular cafe & bar calls their decor sentimental 'South Beach' - and it doesn't disappoint! Think cushioned benches, distressed wood, pristine white pillows, vintage furniture pieces, and plenty of palms and greenery. A friend commented that billowing shears wouldn't be out of place in this scene, and he's right. And while the look may not be novel or overtly luxe, it has a beach house elegance that's quite difficult to pull off in the concrete-clad downtown core of a major urban centre! Kudos!
And. The. Food! Sometimes, thanks in large part to dining snobbery, there can be a certain stigma attached to the term "comfort food". When, in fact, if done well, it truly is an art form. Wish delivers mouth-watering dishes with elegant twist that you wouldn't expect, warming bellies and hearts alike! My favourite would probably be the mouth-watering turkey burger and fries - quite possibly the best I've had in the city!! And it's worthwhile to note I'm using the term comfort food quite broadly, as their dinner menu includes such succulent offerings as pan-seard cod, short ribs, and duck breast.
So what can you expect next time you stop by? Well be sure to make a reservation, as it's popularity is skyrocketing. Wish is a favourite backdrop of the social media army. Bloggers and Insta Experts clamour over the decor and the architecture - including the soon-to-be-iconic 'WISH' sign - calling it one of the most Instagrammable Brunch Spots, or one of the 7 Most Aesthetically Pleasing Toronto Restaurants.
And Wish? They're playing it cool, keeping a low profile, tucked away on Charles Street and just out of reach of Yorkville's finest. Live your best life and the people will come to you!
