My favourite meal of the week is brunch. And while my occupation as a Realtor prevents its frequent indulgence - given weekends are when most Buyers have time to view property - I would happily live on home fries and eggs of most any style (poached soft and eggs benny make me sing) - if my waistline would permit it.
For several years I've been indulging at Mitzi's Cafe in Roncesvalles Village. After all, this purveyor of the yolk boasts rave reviews, particularly surrounding their oatmeal buttermilk pancakes, spiced potatoes, and perfectly poached eggs!
I adore Mitzis’ sunny façade, tucked away on tree-lined Sorauren Avenue. Surrounded by century homes, the colourfully painted corner cafe is a bit of a surprise in this residential enclave, but I’ll argue that it's part of its appeal. Inside is exactly the aesthetics I like in a cafe; arborite tables with mismatched chairs, vibrantly vintage coffee mugs, an open-air kitchen, and a classic glass display case that houses trays of baked goods.
There is very limited seating so it's not unusual to have to wait a little bit, which one can do outside with a cup of java while waiting for a table. Local artist works hangs on the walls, making this place not only eye-catching, but also engaging. If your breakfast/brunch date proves to be a bore, simply immerse yourself in the artwork around you, or check out the other patrons. You can see a lot of unaffected beauty here.
Sitting by the storefront windows was the perfect spot for people watching on the rainy morning I popped in. I ordered the oatmeal buttermilk pancakes with banana just to switch it up, for I'd read so many good reviews I wanted to try them for myself. They lived up to the reviews and beyond. But even better were the home fries, which offset the sweetness of the pancakes nicely. Made with halved baby potatoes they were spiced perfectly! My only complaint is that there weren't more of them, but, again: waistline.
Note, while the menu is limited (about 8 items) it's constantly changing – so make sure you check it out ahead of time if you have dietary restrictions or allergies. Personally I like a selection that varies, no doubt dependent on whatever fresh ingredients they have on hand. Mitzi’s dishes are “not only homemade, but are seasonally relevant and come from local distributors.” – Mitziscafe.com
