Cool Hand Of A Girl Cafe In The Junction

City Living, Junction / High Park / Bloor West / Swansea, Restaurants

Don't you think every neighbourhood should have a diner? The kind of place that’s always welcoming and sort of feels like an extension of your home, except someone else is in the kitchen fixin’ a great plate of something delicious? This week, guest writer Monika hits up a cool cafe in The Junction. Here, she shares her insights.

Cool Hand of a Girl Cafe, located just east of Keele on Dundas West, is the quintessential diner which offers tasty healthy home-style meals made from organic local produce.

But first, “What’s with the name?”.

It turns out it's from a scene in the philosophical essay 'Myth of Sisyphus' by Albert Camus, which suggests that when life’s burdens become too much, all you need is the 'Cool Hand Of A Girl'. While that may work for Sisyphus, when my burdens become too much all I need is a good cup of coffee and an all-day-breakfast plate. Which is exactly what this urbaneer fan ordered when I visited the local cafe with my good friend Megs. We’re both busy but every once in a while we like to take a bit of a time out and become 'Ladies Who Lunch'.

My all day breakfast offered two scrambled, fluffy, free-range eggs, organic multi-grain toast, and a side of deliciously refreshing coleslaw, which I really think should be sold by the jar. Megs went with the avocado and parmesan sandwich which was also filled with fresh greens, basil, tomato, veganaise and tangy lemon pepper dressing. The sandwich was served with a side of home-made butternut squash soup, perfect for an Autumn afternoon.

And of course, there had to be java! (cappuccino to be exact)…which was rich and flavourful, and worthy of seconds.

Needless to say, all that caffeine made the rest of the day pretty darn productive.

Cool Hand of a Girl Cafe is a great little gem in The Junction. It has the feel of sitting in your mom’s kitchen, with fun, mismatched retro furniture and casual atmosphere. In the middle of the afternoon this place is buzzing with neighbourhood locals enjoying lunch or picking up a coffee to-go. It’ll be even more busy once the construction of the Duke Condo is complete and new residents start to move into the neighbourhood.

If you’re in The Junction, I recommend you stop in. I guarantee you’ll keep coming back.
