August Chills The Market

The housing market in Toronto is really just like the rest of us. After months upon months of frenetic hard work, it just wanted to take a small holiday for a week or two to catch its breath before moving on to the next season. It’s understandable. July 2014 marked the second busiest July ever, according to the latest stats from TREB (click for urbaneer’s recent post). Highlights included a meteoric rise of 10 percent in sales, along with a 7.5 percent hike in prices. Wouldn’t you want to take a breather? All signs point to a robust fall, so stay tuned!

HomeWatch News - Interest Rates, Affordability, and the Toronto Housing Boom

Interest rates are at historic lows, meaning more people are able to borrow more money. It’s not just the low interest rates themselves, but the extended period of time that rates have hovered in and around these levels, that raise our flag of concern. The reality of homeownership today, is that most participants have succumbed - out of necessity or desire - to the lure of cheap money which encourages us to get on the “buy-now-pay-later” band wagon. This is a bit of a scary prospect - because it is a contrived reality. When the single-focused aim is to secure property in a bidding war climate where the overriding sense of urgency prevails, the winning bidder often says... “What’s another $100 a month on our mortgage payment if it means we get this?”
