On Monday night I was showing properties in Riverside and Leslieville, two hot side-by-side neighbourhoods a short streetcar ride east of the downtown core and top picks for pro-urban professionals seeking the greatest housing bang for your buck. Wrapping up at 7pm, I gave a friend a shout and suggested he join me at Table17, a stylish bistro wine bar I'd be keen to try.
As an uncomplicated foodie, I LOVE the marriage of great simple seasonal fare in a relaxed comfortable setting, and Table17 was a perfect union. Situated at 782 Queen Street East just east of Broadview, on Sunday and Monday nights they have a Prix Fixe three-course menu for a stellar $32+taxes/tip per person. Add a couple of their brilliant cocktails (try the Tendulkar made with Bombay Sapphire Gin, juices of fresh lemon, basil, mint and coriander leaves!) and coffees and the $100 experience was good value.
The three rooms set in two former vintage storefronts each have their unique personalities but remain unified in their casual charm of rustic wood, comfortable seating and soft lighting to look beautiful by – all the right visual ingredients to complement chef John Sinopoli's euro culinary creations.
We dined on Spinach and Arugula Salads, Steak Frites with Brussel Sprouts seared in bacon, and Caramel Pudding with sea salt. Classic fare with good flavours, thoughtful-execution, and appropriately sated portions.
Having perfected my skill set in the art of serving during the ten years I waited tables while in university, I appreciated our server Amanda. She was attentive, engaging, and respectful of the leisurely pace I eat. Thank you!
If you buy in Riverside or Leslieville, definitely count Table17 as a special place to celebrate your home purchase, especially if it includes thanking your in-laws for helping you out with the down payment! By giving them a taste of the neighbourhood, they'll see why you value this dynamite 'hood. It's worth every penny.
A big thumb's up from steve.
