Those of us lucky enough to live or work in and around West Queen West are never short on options for lunch where, for the most part, poutine and burritos are the local stars. However, for those of us watching cyclists and joggers clearly demonstrating their commitment to healthy, active living on even the most frigid of days, we know eating smart is one small step towards a slimmer waistline.
Placed between The Drake and The Gladstone, Toronto’s hippest boutique hotels, Bolt Fresh Bar is a welcome new addition to the West Queen West landscape.
Now hungry Queen West-ers looking for fresh can bypass the ubiquitous foot-long sandwich chain for sustenance that's more 'real'. Phew!
We visited Bolt for lunch in search of serious brain food during a particularly busy day. The staff is not only warm and welcoming but, more importantly, extremely knowledgeable about their menu.
A quick study of the menu shows that smoothies, salads and grain bowls - along with an impressive selection of produce - demonstrates Bolt’s devotion to the seasonal.
Homemade soups, stews and detoxing beverages are also available.
Urbaneer chose a grain bowl from their well-crafted menu but, for the finicky, this is a place where you can create your own meal (you choose – salad or grain – plus any five items and dressing for $9). Our fav was the Vitamin Sea Bowl – an inspired quinoa bowl filled with a mixture of toppings including avocado, seaweed and kelp noodles anchored with a tangy lemon tahini dressing. Some wonderful crunchy carrots pickled with Rosemary were substituted for the kimchi, making it a much needed hit of freshness on a dreary day.
Not only were we satisfied but we bypassed the dreaded post lunch blahs.
Consider Bolt a highly recommended choice for lunch (and dinner - they're open until 9 most nights) in West Queen West!
